Mental health should not be ignored
Mental health should not be ignored

Parents are being killed by children, children are being killed by parents, suicides are on the rise after eve-teasing or divorce or depression, drug addiction is on the rise, young people are indulging in militant ideology, people are suffering from schizophrenia-depression and other mental illnesses. Loss of performance-creativity — these events are due to mental illness and the damage is immeasurable. So mental problems should not be neglected.

This time the theme of World Mental Health Day was, ‘Dignity in Mental Health: Primary Mental Health Assistance for All’. Ordinary people are starting to see mental illness or problems positively, this is a matter of hope. But the way physical illness is taken seriously is not the case with mental illness. We go to the doctor without any hesitation if the physical condition worsens a little. So how many people go to the doctor in time for the care or treatment of the mind, which is more complex than the body? This problem will be greatly reduced if mental health care is provided to everyone at an early stage. Social and emotional skills, as well as the ability to deal with stress, will increase in the treatment of this disease.

The foundation of mental health is formed from the mother's pregnancy. Then there is the importance of good parenting in the family, mental health care in the pre-school and school stages, advanced child care centers, mental health care and treatment from the development and protection of mental health at work to the last day of life.

Since the advent of BLS (Basic Life Support) and CRP (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) in the sixties, the lives of many patients have been saved, starting with pedestrians. Similarly, in the case of mental health, such as first aid or primary health care is absolutely necessary. At least one in four people can develop serious mental health problems at any one time, requiring instant medical attention. And it can be at home, at school, in vehicles, at work, at leisure and recreation centers, at primary health care centers and at general hospitals and mental hospitals — everywhere.

Primary health care can be divided into two parts

A. Psychological First Aid:

According to the World Health Organization, 'Psychological First Aid is the delivery of caring, collaborative, practical assistance in the event of a serious mental crisis.' Building collapses, earthquakes, cyclones, etc. Anyone can provide this service — health workers, volunteers, disaster management workers, etc. The goal is to minimize further complications and damage. This must be done with respect for the dignity and cultural capacity of the victim. Its main features are

1. Provide immediate care.
2. Know their needs and concerns.
3. Assist in meeting basic needs (food, water, information).
4. Listen to them attentively (don't be pressured to tell a story).
5. Bring back comfort to them or help keep them calm.
6. Protect from excess damage.

To achieve this goal, you need to remember 3 L's.

Look: Paying attention to their safety, paying attention to their urgent needs, and paying special attention to those among them who are experiencing severe pain and emotional reactions.

Listening: Listening attentively to their needs and concerns; Listen to them to comfort and calm them down.

Linking: To meet basic needs and get other services, you need to contact the appropriate authorities or centers, help to cope with the problem, provide all the necessary information, connect with the organization providing social support.

B. Mental Health First Aid:

Providing mental health care and support to patients. This healthcare should be provided as long as the mental healthcare is being provided by a professional. The goal is

1. Protecting a person's life, where a person's life is threatened (suicide attempt).
2. To prevent mental illness from progressing to a more serious stage (most suicides are due to the progression of depression).
3. Helping to overcome and stay free from mental problems.
4. Trying to keep mental patients at ease.

Who will give this first aid?

Family members, friends, office colleagues, teachers, police, and anyone in the patient's social network can provide first aid. With a little training, skills and knowledge can be increased. They will basically identify the symptoms of the disease and instruct the patient to take proper treatment.

Why Mental First Aid?

Mental problems are a common problem, especially depression, anxiety, drug addiction, suicide attempts, etc. Are very common mental problems. It is possible to overcome mental problems with one's own will.

According to a World Health Organization survey, very few mental patients take actual modern treatment. Again, many come to science-based medical treatment after a long period of malpractice. The longer it takes to treat mental illness, the greater the complications and the less likely the treatment results. Therefore, the mental patient should be ensured health care with due respect and dignity, ignoring all public shame. We receive first aid at home for physical problems. Similarly, in order to provide basic mental health care to everyone, one needs to know about psychological first aid and be skilled in using it.

We shouldn't be ignored or neglect mental health.
